PLANT HEALTH MANAGEMENT

“FOCUS ON THE PLANT HEALTH NOT THE PEST"

  IPM PHASE I (1-2 years)   6-9 Visits or Applications

  • Diagnosis of insect & disease problems, Check incremental growth

  • Soil samples for condition, type, etc.

Remediation programs – nutrients, compost, mulch,etc.

  • Begin to retain beneficial populations; learn to identify eggs, larva, adult.

  • Reduce use of pesticides:  Choose low residual, bio-rational pest control products.

                        Physical:  Traps:  sticky, hanging drop, etc.

Outcome: Plants start to react, retain green color, less pesticides. You gain client confidence.


PHC PHASE II (2+ YEARS)   3-6 visits + Diagnostic visits

  • Continue Diagnosis:  Check incremental growth

  • Continue soil remediation

  • Cut beds for trees

  • Remove & renovate plant material

  • Plant resistant varieties

  • Plant some big trees, i.e.:  “The Mighty Oak”

  • More difficult problems:

      a)  Root or basal rot

         b)  Girdling roots or “Trapped” roots, (baskets, plastic burlap,

twine)

                     c)  Disease

                     d)  Extreme soil problems

                     e)  Irrigation problems

  • Cultural or Aesthetic Pruning

Outcome: Client Education: Plants are healthy, incremental growth should increase. 

Plants that will not recover or those which need time and extra care are addressed.  

New plantings should be started.

 

PHM: MAINTENANCE AND PROPERTY MANAGEMENT   PHASE III

  • Continue Diagnosis

  • Soil sampling every 2 years or as needed for diagnosis

  • Meet other horticultural operators on property, to meet common goals also to refer out work.

  • Programs are easier to predict.

Outcome:  Referrals are given, Trust is established. Client confidence provides repeat business and referrals.


Available for scouting and training for any type of landscape.
